A room that’s always too hot or too cold? An addition, finished basement or older home with no ductwork? A ductless mini-split heats and cools just the spaces you need, with no ducts. Is a Mini-Split Right for Your Space?

Mini-splits solve comfort problems that central systems can’t reach. They work especially well for:

  • Additions and sunrooms where extending ductwork is hard or expensive
  • Finished basements, attics and bonus rooms that never feel comfortable
  • Garages and workshops
  • Older homes with radiators or no ducts at all
  • Replacing window units with something quieter and more efficient
  • Hot or cold rooms that the central system can’t keep up with

Ducted vs Ductless: Which Fits Your Home?

Neither system is better everywhere. The right choice depends on your ductwork and the rooms you want to fix.

  • Central (ducted) system: best for whole homes with good existing ductwork. Vents are hidden, and one system serves the house through one or a few zones. Leaky ducts can waste energy.
  • Ductless mini-split: best for homes or rooms without ducts, additions and problem rooms. Each indoor unit has its own temperature, and there are no duct losses. The indoor units are visible on the wall, ceiling or floor.

Many homes use both: central air for the main floors and a mini-split for the room it can’t reach. For a whole-home system, see heat pump installation.

Single-Zone vs Multi-Zone Mini-Splits

A mini-split has an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units, connected by a small conduit that carries the power cable and refrigerant lines.

  • Single-zone: one outdoor unit and one indoor unit, for one room or open area.
  • Multi-zone: one outdoor unit feeding two or more indoor units, each with its own temperature control.

Heating and Cooling With a Mini-Split

Most mini-splits are heat pumps, so the same system heats in winter and cools in summer. Ask us whether a model suits your home as the main heat source or as extra heat for one area.

What Affects Mini-Split Installation Cost

Every home is different, so the price depends on your project:

  • The number of zones and indoor units
  • System capacity for the size of each room
  • The type of indoor unit: wall, ceiling or floor
  • The length and route of the line set between the indoor and outdoor units
  • Electrical work needed for the new system
  • How easy the install locations are to reach

Mini-Split Replacement

Ductless systems typically last 12 to 15 years. It may be time to replace yours if you notice:

  • Age: the system is near or past 12-15 years old
  • Frequent breakdowns or a system that no longer runs at full capacity
  • Rising energy bills with no change in use
  • Grinding, banging or screeching noises
  • Uneven cooling or heating across the space

Our technicians assess your current system and recommend the best replacement option for your home or office.

Mini-Split FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most about mini-splits.

How much does mini-split installation cost?
It depends mostly on the number of zones, the system size and the install route. We give you a free estimate before any work begins.

Is a mini-split better than central HVAC?
Neither is better everywhere. A mini-split wins where there are no ducts or a room needs its own control. Central systems suit whole homes with good ductwork.

Is it cheaper to run a 110V or a 220V mini-split?
Voltage alone doesn’t set the running cost. The system’s capacity and efficiency rating matter more.

Why is my electric bill high with a mini-split?
Common causes are a unit sized wrong for the room, dirty filters or coils, or an aging system. A service visit can check this.

Can a mini-split heat my home in winter?
Most mini-splits are heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. Ask us whether your model is right for your home’s heating needs.

How long does a mini-split last?
Typically 12 to 15 years, longer with regular maintenance.
